FAQs

  1. How do I know if I have varicose veins?
  2. Can varicose veins cause permanent damage or dangerous conditions?

1. How do I know if I have varicose veins?

The same problem that causes varicose veins also causes spider veins.  Because spider veins are so small and do not cause the more severe complications of varicose veins they are usually considered to be “cosmetic.”  This usually means that your health insurance will not pay for treatment of spider veins.

Varicose veins are the larger, bulging, bluish, or purple veins that are raised from the surface of the skin.  Some are subtle and some are extremely visible.  Patients presenting with symptoms of venous insufficiency ( a medical term for varicose veins) such as those listed below should undergo an in-depth evaluation including a duplex ultrasound study to determine the extent of the disease and the best treatment.

Symptoms caused by varicose veins:

  • Leg pain
  • Aching, and fatigue
  • Itching, burning
  • Skin rashes of the ankles and lower legs
  • Heaviness of the legs
  • Throbbing
  • Cramps at night or during the day.
  • A restless feeling in your legs, especially when you go to bed.
  • Discoloration of the skin
  • Severe bleeding episodes
  • Skin ulcers or sores.

2. Can varicose veins cause permanent damage or dangerous conditions?

Yes.  As the venous reflux (blood flowing in the wrong direction) gets worse more symptoms and changes occur.  You may have swelling and edema of the feet, ankles, and legs.  You can get changes in the skin color.  In some cases this can be a lighter color or blanched appearance.  In most cases it will be a darkening of the skin.  You may also have redness from inflammation.  The skin will become thick and hard, while the layer under the skin will thin.

These changes are associated with more pain, fatigue, heaviness, and sometimes with night time, or day time cramping.  As these changes continue the discoloration may become permanent, and the skin may breakdown causing open, chronic, and painful sores on your ankles or lower legs.  These are very difficult to heal.

Varicose veins increase your risk of getting blood clots in the veins of your legs.  Blood clots in the leg veins may break loose and move to the lungs causing severe chest pain, shortness of breath, or even death.

Not all leg cramps are caused by varicose veins.  They are sometimes caused by a severe arterial disease called PAD.  If you are having leg cramps, especially when you exercise, you should see your primary care doctor, or see us.
